Off-gas Measurement Calculations

Oxygen Update Rate (OUR), Carbon Evolution Rate (CER), Respiration Quotient (RQ) - how are they calculated? What are the versions?

Updated over 2 years ago

All microbial reactors at Culture Biosciences are equipped with oxygen and carbon dioxide off-gas sensors.

Please see our Off-gas White Paper for more details regarding the technology development and testing of our off-gas sensors.

Oxygen Update Rate (OUR), Carbon Evolution Rate (CER), and Respiratory Quotient (RQ) are calculated using the raw off-gas concentration data generated by the sensors in combination with gas flow rate data and volume estimations. These calculations are reported live on Culture Bioscience’s online data monitoring platform during fermentations.

v1 Off-gas Calculation Assumptions:

  • Inlet flow = outlet flow

  • Presence of water vapor in outlet stream ignored

  • Molar volume at 25°C

Resulting v1 Equation:

We are working on a v2 Off-gas Calculation and it is currently under review.
